DDR memory is slowly but surely began to be abandoned by users, but that does not mean that this type of memory can not be found on the market. Manufacturer of memory module maker would still provide regular DDR memory types in stock in sufficient quantities for users who still need the memory, either to upgrade or to replace the memory used in the system.
Patriot, a trademark of PDP Systems is one brand of memory that can be found on the market. Manufacturers based in Fremont, California, United States is through distributors in Indonesia are still providing their PSD512400 series products to be consumed users in Indonesia. For information, the product is a kind of memory capacity of 512MB DDR400. Let's uncover some performance and some other things about this one memory module.
As usual, the Patriot Memory product comes with a simple plastic packaging. Unlike some other memory products, packaging Patriot memory is very easy to open without the need to help craft knife or scissors. The author personally prefers the model packs like this.
As the products come from the ranks of the Patriot Signature Line, PSD512400 is also equipped with a cooling of barium copper heatspreader. Special to the Patriot DDR400 memory series to give the feel of red
hearts on the heatspreader. In the picture, you can see that the heatspreader cool the whole chip memory that is available on both sides of the memory modules (total 16 pieces of IC). Heatspreader is attached to the surface of memory chips with the aid of a thermal pad. The use of IC with the number of lots that increase the chances of the possibility of older motherboard that supports DDR memory to accommodate this.
As usual, the labels attached, printed product code, serial number for the unit concerned, and also mentioned information about the type of memory module and its latency. For this one, it shows that 512MB DDR400 memory has a default CAS Latency of 2.5.
The following memory specifications Patriot PSD512400 provided by the manufacturer:
- PC3200 (400MHz) Data Rate
- 184-Pin Dual in-line memory module
- 2 Rank Double-sided module
- 7.8US Refresh Interval (8192 CYCLES/64MS)
- 2.6V Power Requirement
- Auto and self refresh capability
- PCB height: 1160 (mil)
- Serial Presence-Detect (SPD)
- 100% Tested, Lifetime Warranty
Examination
Because this is not a product of memory dual channel kit, to test our test run in single channel mode only. In addition due to chance only one unit we received, testing with single channel usually can produce a better performance improvement compared to when tested in dual channel mode.
To ensure the system is unstable due to the processor that was overclocked too high, in testing we intentionally lower the processor multiplier that we used. This meant that we could know where maximum performance until the memories.
The system that we use to perform the test are:
o Motherboard: Abit AS8
o CPU: Intel Pentium 4 560 Prescott core
o HSF: Stock cooling
o VGA: Gigabyte FX5950 Ultra
o Hard Disk: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 40GB PATA
o PSU: Enlight 420W
o OS: Windows XP Professional, FAT 32NTFS, Service Pack 1.
For benchmarking, we use the test software as follows:
o Everest Ultimate Edition 2006
o PCMark 2005
o 3DMark 2001SE v330
o Sisoft Sandra Lite 2007
o Super Pi Mod 1.4
We did repetition of the test to ensure that the value obtained is an average performance. When tested, we can raise this PSD512400 Patriot memory clock down to the number 246MHz (492MHz DDR). In this clock system can still work with stable and capable of completing all our test series.
Actually, this memory also managed to reach 253MHz clock (506MHz DDR). Although we could measure the range of memory bandwidth with Sisoft Sandra 2007, but the speed of the system crashes on other test applications that we run though the voltage memory, processor, and chipset, we've added. For information, 246MHz clock is we get with devault voltage. For your information also, at the highest frequency of memory, processor speed is still at 3.44 GHz. This is below the original clock of 3.6 GHz processor. That is, the processor is not overclocked, and instability caused by the memory frequency is set to exceed the maximum limit terstabil memories.
For comparison, we also run a memory test by timing strictest supported by the motherboard we use is 2-2-2-5. As for the timing, the memory is only capable of running at a frequency of 166MHz (333MHz DDR), but still with the command per clock is activated. Here are the results of the testing that we can:
On the application of synthetic benchmarks such as Everest, it appears there was an increase by 17 to 18 percent in each field test run. In the system we use, it appears that when the memory running at DDR400 with timings a little loose (2,5-3-3-8), system performance is still better than when working at a frequency of DDR333 memory, but with tighter timings. In another synthetic benchmark application like Sisoft Sandra, performance improvements between the default settings with the maximum that can be used is about 18 percent.
In the PCMark 05 test applications in the sub tests of memory, the same increase of between 16 to around 18 percent when using the frequency and timing settings that we have specified.
To test the graphics performance, we deliberately chose graphical test applications that are highly affected by the performance of system performance compared with the 3DMark 2001SE V360 VGA with 640x480 resolution 16-bit and Quake 3 Arena with the Normal setting. In 3DMark 2001SE application, seen an increase in performance by 17 to 18 percent while in the Quake 3 Arena, increase range between 15 to 18 percent.
In testing, we sempatkan also run the Super PI test application is also quite widely used. Increase of about 20 percent obtained between the performance of DDR333 with 2-2-2-5 timing DDR400 2,5-3-3-8 timing and performance of about 16 percent difference between DDR400 with DDR492 timing 2,5-3-3-8 2, 5-3-3-8.
Conclusion
As this article is derived, these products are released at a price range of 56 U.S. dollars by the distributor. For those of you who still use DDR memory-based system and want to increase the capacity of the PC main memory, it may simply be PSD512400 Patriot lyrics. From the results of our tests, offer increased performance generated as shown in the graphs above is quite interesting for a memory timing and memory sold with the standard.
Pros:
- Using the heatspreader
- Still can be overclocked quite well without increasing the voltage
- Using a lot for compatibility against older motherboards
Disadvantages:
- Frequency and timing standards
