The Order of Merit was first held by King Edward VII in 1902. This award is given specifically to individuals honored for their service which is extraordinary in the arts, science and various other fields. Order of Merit recipients are appointed directly by the ruler of the kingdom of England as a personal gift giving, so do not need advice or consideration from the government or other parties.

Thus, now Sir Tim joined the elite group receiving the highest award the British empire and the right to use the
initials OM behind his name. Noted the Order of Merit award recipients include Sir Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa, Bertrand Russell, Florence Nightingale and Baroness Thatcher.
